What is a massage, and why should I get one?
Massage is the manual manipulation of tissues to improve health and well-being by relaxing muscles, relieving tension, and improving circulation. Massage has been around for thousands of years. It is probably one of man's earliest remedies for pain relief. The word “massage” comes from the Greek root of “masso,” which means "to touch". There are many different types of massage, but the most common is Swedish, which includes deep tissue, sports massage lymphatic drainage, nueromuscular therapy and myofascial release. Shiatsu is an Asian form of massage that focuses on pressure points and stretching. Reflexology was actually developed in the West, but derives from Eastern ideas that the body has a flow of energy, or "chi" that can be unblocked with treatment.

What are the benefits of therapeutic massage?
Massage has signficant psychological and physiological benefits:

* It reduces tension and anxiety, calms the nervous system and promotes a sense of relaxation and well being.
* It improves blood circulation, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cells.
* It prevents and relieves muscle cramps and spasms.
* It stimulates the lymphatic system, which carries away the body’s waste products.

Massage therapy can also help with pain management in conditions such as arthritis, sciatica, and muscle spasms. But many healthy people get a therapeutic massage regularly, because it helps them maintain physical, mental and emotional well being.

I've never had a massage at The HomeSpa® before. What should I do or what should I expect?
There's is really nothing you need to "do" before your massage, other than prepare to relax and enjoy a moment's peace. Upon your arrival at The HomeSpa®, the front desk receptionist will most likely have you take a brief minute to fill out your Pre-Massage Questionnaire for your massage therapist (which must be done every time you receive a massage at The HomeSpa®). It's best to arrive 10-15 minutes early so that you can fill it out, go to the bathroom (which is all the way down the hallway, last door on the right), pay for your services (if you wish), and/or get a quick drink of water or tea from the watercooler near the treatment area entrance—all before your booked appointment time.

Have a seat while you fill out your questionnaire in the reception area. Your massage therapist will meet you there, introduce herself (or himself), and guide you to your treatment room. There, you may undress to where you feel comfortable and lie face down underneath the draping towel with your face in the face cradle, while your therapist takes a moment to go over your massage questionnaire outside your treatment room.

When you're undressed to where you feel comfortable and properly draped, your therapist will knock quietly and enter your treatment room to begin your relaxing, therapeutic massage. During your service, feel free to let him (or her) know if the pressure is okay for you. It's important that you feel comfortable.

Can I get a deep, full body massage in just 45 minutes?
If you're getting a 45-minute massage, your therapist may opt to focus mostly on your back, neck, and shoulders (unless you’ve requested otherwise). If you're getting an hour and fifteen minute massage (or longer), you can most often expect to have your back, your neck, your shoulders, your arms, your legs, and sometimes your hands and feet all worked on as well. Feel free to tell your therapist what area(s) you'd like her (or him) to work on most. A reflexology massage focuses mainly on the feet and the hands. For those of you requesting deep tissue massage, it's helpful to know that good therapists often start out more or less moderate before diving in really deep, so the longer the massage time, the better.

(And remember: You should remain properly draped for the duration of your service. We do not offer any services of a sensual or sexual nature whatsoever, so let's not even go there!)

About halfway through your massage, your therapist may ask you to turn over and slide your head all the way onto the massage table. Many of our therapists opt to stand outside the treatment room door while you flip yourself over, slide your head OFF the face cradle and ONTO the table, and get yourself ready for side two—face up. Others simply hold the draping towel low enough to give you room to quickly rotate under it and slide your head onto the table. Either way is fine.

When your massage is over, you'll feel very relaxed and refreshed. Your therapist will leave the room to allow you to get dressed and stagger back to the reception area. If you need to go to the restroom, again it's all the way down the hall, last door on the right. You should stop and get a cup of water from the watercooler, if your therapist hasn't already gotten one for you. It's best to drink lots of water after a massage to take the most advantage of the detoxifying lymphatic stimulation you just received.

Back at the front desk, you can pay for your services (if you haven't already done so), leave a tip for your therapist if you like, and/or schedule your next appointment for another relaxing massage at The HomeSpa®. Believe me, once you start, you won't want to stop!

Do you offer massages for pregnant women?
Yes, we do offer massages for pregnant women at the exact same cost and duration as our listed massage services. Expectant mothers, however, must be AT LEAST 12 weeks (or more) pregnant in order to receive a massage at The HomeSpa®.

We do accept pregnant clients who are at or near full term, but we highly recommend that you check with your doctor first before receiving a massage or any type of body work while you're pregnant.

At The HomeSpa® we use pregnancy tables with breast and belly cut-outs for your convenience, so that you can lie on your stomach if you feel comfortable in that position. This is often a great benefit for many of you, especially those of you in the later weeks of your pregnancy, as it allows your massage therapist to access your back and shoulders more directly. However, the use of pillows and the like have sufficed for milennia (and much depends on the capable hands of your therapist), so if you’d rather do a sideline massage using strategically placed pillows, simply let us know and we’d be more than happy to oblige.

*Feel free to request your favorite HomeSpa® therapist. Also, if you have a preference regarding the gender of your therapist, simply let us know when booking your appointment, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
